Good Reads on Facebook Data “Leak” and “Hacks”

First of all Facebook is not hacked.

Nor there’s a data leaked.

The whole huh-ha about Cambridge Analytica, FB users’ privacy crisis, and Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony to Congress on main stream media is entertaining. Watching Mark’s responses to some of the questions remind me (a lot) of the movie “The Social Network”.

Many of these questions and writings are focusing on the shallows or issues that don’t matter.

Shareaholic Traffic Report (2017)

Recent Shareaholic traffic report indicates that web traffic pattern is shifting from social to search in 2017. Pinterest, Google, and Instagram came out as the big winners as Facebook share of visits dropped ~8% in 2017. Social network, in a whole, is no longer the biggest traffic driver for the 250,000+ sites (this blog included) using Shareaholic app. Instead, search is.

Search finally had a comeback year and overtook Social as the top traffic driver within our network.

Search surpassed social media networks as the biggest traffic driver in 2017.

Facebook visits dropped a massive 12.7% between the second half of 2016 and the second half of 2017.

How Does The Facebook News Feed Work?

From Adam Mosseri’s 2016 F8 Presentation (Head of Product for News Feed).

Key takeaway, quoting +Glenn Gabe notes – "Facebook then predicts if a user will take these actions based on a number of factors. The top signals include who posted the update, the amount of interactions on a post (i.e. likes and comments), the type of content (photos, video, etc.), and your previous actions with that entity on Facebook (your friend or publisher you follow). For example, how much has a user engaged with that person or publisher?"

Must read (and watch) for Facebook marketers.

F8 2016

In brief –

  1. Messenger gets chatbots
  2. Livestream API opens for developers
  3. Facebook is launching its first Internet-beaming satellite
  4. 360-degree camera / flying saucer
  5. Account Kit: Sign in to apps without passwords
  6. A ‘Save to Facebook’ button
  7. A button for sharing quotes

… and more.

I think the “Save to Facebook” button is going to cause some problems to Evernote.
